McDonalds Player Escorts

In April, John ‘Shoes’ Lesiba Moshoeu arrived to assist Rena le Lona. As the McDonalds Restaurant Representative in SA, he introduced Rena le Lona to Alastair Marks, McDonalds UK, who organised the Player Escorts for the UK team in their UK – USA Soccer World Cup match on 12th June in Rustenberg. Natalie Kirby, Head of Media Relations Corporate Affairs UK, met with Nozipho Jafta Johannesburg Project Head for 2010 and Maredi Mogodi and Sechaba Communications Managers McDonalds SA, together with Greg Solomon at Rena Le Lona to plan the event. Following their visit, 5 children from Rena le Lona were chosen by the children and staff plus one reserve, in case a child is unable to make it. On Monday 25th April the UK contingent arrived again with UK McDonalds CEO Steve Easterbrook and the SA CEO, a reporter from the London Sun plus a photographer. A number of caterers and body guards were on the scene. The team first had a discussion with the founder, Michelle Friedman, and a short tour of the building before they were royally entertained by the children through comedy, song, drama, dance and drumming. Photographs were taken of the 5 children and the reserve and the children were interviewed by the journalist. The children not chosen, that is 112 were treated to a day at the Gold Reef City funfair. All of Rena le Lona attended a Fan Park on 12th June to watch our children walk on to the field. Our 5 Player Escorts stayed in a Southern Sun hotel for the three days with the 6 UK children, also aged between 6 – 10 years. Every kind of cautionary measure was taken to ensure our children were safe and happy. A coach from the centre or their immediate guardian accompanied each child, as was the case with the UK children.
